A Delicious New Find – Cooralook 2007 Shiraz

As a wine consultant for over a year, I know how important it is to listen to customers preferences regardless of what I like, to make the best recommendation. The experience has made me more attentive to recommendations I’m given when shopping for wine. I was out last week wanting something new and decided to finally visit The Wine Seller at a friends urging. I was greeted upon entering and a few minutes later after watching me look at reds, the sales associate brought over a bottle with one of the prettiest labels and a name I’d never seen before.

The wine was a Shiraz and I was assured it was full-bodied and smooth but not the typical fruit bomb many Australian Shiraz’s are known to be. At a $12.99 price point how could I say no to that? The description fit my palate perfectly and I was excited to try it having never heard of it before. The Cooralook 2007 Shiraz was even better than I imagined. It was a gorgeous color in the glass and on the nose I got lots of dark fruit including raspberries, my favorite. On the palate, it was full, elegant and intense. I tasted plum and raspberries with a touch of spice followed by a long smooth finish.  I loved it alone while cooking but it also paired nicely with my BBQ grilled chicken salad that had a ton of other veggies and flavors in it.

This wine is part of the Yabby Lake family of wines coming from the Victoria region in Australia. It’s an interesting story and worth checking out. I’ll be looking further into other wines from this producer. Needless to say, this is a great find and I went back to buy one of the last two bottles in the store the next day. I’m told it will be back and I’ll be keeping an eye out. I love a good Shiraz and this one for the price, quality and pretty label is worth trying.
